This course provides an introduction to drug and alcohol awareness for professionals and volunteers working mainly with young people under the age of 19 old.

This one day course explores the reasons why young people use substances; the effects of common drugs; harm reduction; and screening and referral procedures within Brighton and Hove. The course has been designed for core workers within the Children and Young People workforce, described as anyone who occasionally comes into contact with substance misuse in their day to day work.

The course is an essential pre-cursor for anyone wishing to progress to enhanced or intensive level substance misuse courses.

Learning Outcomes:


§ Be aware about substances, their use and effects
§ Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
§ Assess and act upon immediate risks of danger to substance misusers
§ Carry out screening and referral assessment
§ Understand and describe the reasons why young people use substances


This course is linked to relevant NOS, Youth Justice and Youth Work National Occupational Standards AA1, AB5, AD1, AF1 and 1.42
