Clone of Young People & Substances (Core Level) - 06 October 2010 - 09:30 to 16:30

This course provides an introduction to drug and alcohol awareness for professionals and volunteers working mainly with young people under the age of 19 old.

This one day course explores the reasons why young people use substances; the effects of common drugs; harm reduction; and screening and referral procedures within Brighton and Hove. The course has been designed for core workers within the Children and Young People workforce, described as anyone who occasionally comes into contact with substance misuse in their day to day work.

Strategies to Addess Sexual Risk Taking Behaviour - 22 April 2011- 09:30 to 16:30

Young people are often clued up about sexual health, STI’s and contraception; however, there is often a gap when it comes to putting this knowledge into action. This new course aims to provide participants with practical tools to address sexual risk taking behaviour amongst young people. We will explore strategies in working with young people in a proactive preventative approach through group work and one to one interventions. The course content is based in line with the national and local good practice evidence base and will refer to the NICE Guidance on Behaviour Change (2007). It will be expected that participants have previously attended a basic sexual health course.

Domestic Abuse and Substance Misuse - 15/04/2011 - 09:30 to 16:30

This course will enable participants to understand and gain skills to work effectively with clients who present with domestic abuse and substance misuse. Participants will explore the behaviours which constitute domestic abuse, and the ways in which substances are used by both survivor and perpetrator. Domestic abuse risk management and safety planning will be considered within the context of working with clients with these dual issues. Participants will learn to recognise the need to work at community level with effective screening and signposting on to relevant services.

This course has been designed for front line drug and alcohol professionals wishing to improve their response to clients who may be experiencing domestic abuse. It is also suitable for professionals in the domestic abuse field and professionals from primary and community health, housing, social care, mental health, police and criminal justice and voluntary organisations who wish to raise their general awareness about the dual issues.

Clone of Young People and Alcohol - 30 June 2010 - 09:30 to 16:30

As hospital admissions continue to rise for the under 14s and more young people are developing alcohol-related health problems, there is a high level of concern about excessive drinking by young people. This one day course has been designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to enable them to work more effectively with young people using alcohol. It will explore the physical, psychological, social, legal and emotional effects of alcohol, the risks alcohol can present to young people’s health and how to provide brief advice and support to young people.

Target Group: 
The course is suitable for professionals and volunteers working mainly with young people under 19 years old, for Core Workers within the Children and Young People’s Workforce, described as anyone who occasionally comes into contact with substance misuse in their day-to-day work.

Cannabis: All You Need To Know - 07 December 2010 - 09:30 to 13:30

This half day course gives the essential facts and dispels some of the myths about cannabis, Britain's most-used illicit drug. It is suitable for anyone working in health, housing, social services, criminal justice, education or voluntary services.

- Identify the effects and risks of cannabis
- Describe the various varieties and potencies of cannabis and the methods used
- Discuss the current evidence on links between cannabis use and mental health
- Explain the use of brief interventions and harm reduction approaches with cannabis users

An introductory two-day Open College Network accredited course on substance misuse, its related problems and interventions. This course reflects National Occupational Standards, and outlines essential knowledge for anyone who comes into contact with drug or alcohol users in their work. This course is suitable for those working in primary and community health, housing, social care, mental health, police and criminal justice, voluntary organisations and for anyone new to the substance misuse sector.

Clone of C-Card Training - 20 May 2010 - 09:30 to 13:30

The C-Card Scheme is designed to increase the availability and acceptability of free condoms amongst under 25s in Brighton and Hove, and to use free condoms as an entry point to talk to young people about sexual health and contraception. Although it is open to all young poeple, the scheme is specifically targeted to vulnerable youths and populations.

Through the scheme, young people are given access to free condoms after they had an initial consultation with a sexual health promotion specialist / practitioner at one of the designated C-Card outlets.

During the initial consultation, the practitioner and young person talk to one another about sexual health issues, contraception, sexual readiness, sexual safety, std / sti information and condom knowledge. At the end of the consultation, the young person is issued a C-Card and given a safer sex pack (with six condoms, lube, and a sexual health information leaflet).
